1,228 PHUs in Salone

The Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Health has said Sierra Leone has 1,228 peripheral health units.

Jonathan Abass Kamara told journalists that the PHUs provide quality and affordable health service nationwide, but said some are owned by individuals and religious organisations.

The PHUs are designed to be the delivery point for primary healthcare in the country. The public health delivery system comprises three levels: community health centre, community health post and maternal and child health post, he said.

"Apart from the tertiary, secondary and district hospitals, there is a total of 1,228 PHUs in the country from among private, mission and government," Jonathan said.

He said this while reacting to media allegations concerning the proliferation of health clinics and centers.

He confirmed each district has a Health Management Team and PHUs, with at least one hundred technical staff.

He said the management team takes responsibility for planning, organising and monitoring of health provision, training personnel, working with communities and supplying equipment and drugs.
