Lomé, Togo, Tuesday, 31st July 2018* – His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio received ovation at the opening ceremony of the 53rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS held in Lomé, Togo.

 

The ovation came during the opening statement of the ECOWAS Chairman, President of the Togolese Republic, H.E Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe who singled out President Bio to welcome him to his maiden ECOWAS Summit and congratulated him for his election as President of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

President of the Republic of Togo, who doubles as the Ebola Coordinator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in the fight against the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe Friday 6 February 2015 paid a one day working and solidarity visit to Sierra Leone, as part of his tri-nations tour of Ebola worst hit countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

In his ongoing nationwide social mobilization drive to give a final push against the Ebola virus disease (EVD), President Ernest Bai Koroma on Saturday 17th January admonished paramount chiefs, religious leaders, traditional and cultural society heads, MPs, councillors and other stakeholders of Moyamba District to avoid practices that will prolong the battle against the disease.

Even as his country registered 19 new Ebola cases over a 24-hour period, Sierra Leone's president is predicting there will be zero new confirmed cases by the end of March.

President Ernest Bai Koroma also predicted that his West African country — one of three hardest hit by the outbreak — would be Ebola-free by World Health Organization standards by May. Koroma made this pronouncement during town hall meetings this week in the northern Districts of Port Loko, Tonkolili, and Bombali.

~~Director for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States Dr Tom Frieden has described the “Western Area Surge” as a step in the right direction, adding that President Koroma’s leadership of the national response against Ebola is very effective. “Last time when we met I was deeply impressed by your understanding of the virus,” he told the president.
